What did Martin Luther King and Malcolm X do to overcome white attitudes?

MLK practiced non-violent resistance, a tactic used by Gandhi to rid India of British rule. Malcolm X advocated complete separation of Blacks and Whites. His followers had to practice strict Muslim discipline. He also advocated that African-Americans return to Africa. MLK wanted integration; X wanted separation and isolation from the evils brought about by white rule.
