Is this common among families with teenagers?

Yes, it is common. Teenagers are constantly changing, their personalities are "under construction", so it will be awhile before your family understands you better, especially your likes and dislikes. And maybe your dad's idea of a social life is to have close friends, not just regular friends who are acquaintances. When I was a teenager, my parents barely knew me, although our relationship is a lot better now since I am out of that stage. Also, I do recommend that you have a best friend, times are hard when you're being misunderstood.
